January 24, Uttarkashi: Today a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, this morning at a depth of 5 km following a 4.8 magnitude quake in Myanmar. Uttarakhand is known for its geological factors, dense population, and seismic activity.
According to the reports of the National Center of Seismology (NCS)’s update, their magnitude is 3.5. The mild-intensity earthquake followed another earthquake that hit Myanmar earlier over the intervening night of Thursday.
The earthquake in Uttarkashi occurred at a depth of 5 km, at latitude 30.85 N and longitude 78.60 E.
“EQ of M: 3.5, On: 24/01/2025 08:19:28 IST, Lat: 30.85 N, Long: 78.60 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand,” read a post by National Center for Seismology on X.
is prone to natural disasters like cloud bursts, flooding, landslides, etc. A few of its regions are also facing the risk of land subsidence. The geologically sensitive location received massive damage due to the 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake. It was a 6.8 magnitude quake which caused extensive damage and loss of life.
Uttarakhand lies in the Himalayan seismic belt, resulting from a collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The constant pressure between the two plates causes immense stress on Earth’s crust which increases the risk of high magnitude earthquakes in the region.
