Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par is caught in controversy. The actor is facing backlash online

In 2007, Aamir Khan produced ‘Taare Zameen Par’, which featured Darsheel Safary as Ishaan, a dyslexic child prodigy. The film was praised for its emotional resonance and for putting learning disabilities in the limelight. Fast-forward to today, and Aamir is preparing to release the sequel, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, which he claims is “way ahead” of the original.

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who joined the Republic Day 2025 festivities at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, did pause to speak about his upcoming assignments, most notably the sequel to Taare Zameen Par, for which he used the title Sitaare Zameen Par.

He spoke about the nature of ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. He called it a “beautiful story” that changes the emotional pitch from the earlier film. While ‘Taare Zameen Par’ is famous for its heart-wrenching story that tends to make people cry, Khan says the new film does something different: “Sitaare Zameen Par makes you laugh; it is a funny film.”

Aamir revealed that the climax of Sitaare Zameen Par was shot in Vadodara, Gujarat.

Both movies have a similar plot of discovering the lives of people with different abilities who are facing numerous challenges.

After 16 years, Aamir has met again with actor Darsheel Safary, who had played the role of the young Ishaan in Taare Zameen Par. Speaking about his long association with the state, Aamir also spoke about how Gujarat had evolved over the years.

Yet the comedic tone of the sequel differentiates it. Khan explained, “In a way, I think it’s way ahead of ‘Taare Zameen Par’, because in ‘Taare Zameen Par’, my character assisted the individual who was with the challenge in the movie, Ishaan. In ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, it’s the ten individuals with challenges; they assist me, the so-called normal individual.”

The movie, based on the 2018 Spanish film Champions, wrapped up shooting in December 2024 and is in the post-production stage.

The release date is June 20, 2025. Despite the prevailing controversies, Khan is committed to the film’s completion and has scheduled focus-group screenings to take audience feedback before the release

As the release date nears, it is yet to be determined how the ongoing controversies will impact the film’s reception. Khan’s past experiences indicate that although issues may generate public debate, they do not necessarily determine a film’s success.
