March 31, Cuttack: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning as 11 coaches of the Bangalore-Kamakhya Superfast Express (Train No. 12551) derailed near Nergundi station in Cuttack, Odisha. The accident, which occurred at 11:54 AM, claimed the life of Subhankar Roy, a resident of West Bengal, and left several passengers injured.
Casualties and Compensation Announced
According to East Coast Railway (ECoR) officials, among the injured, a woman sustained serious injuries, while two men suffered minor injuries. Several other passengers received first aid at the site.
In response to the tragedy, the Railways announced compensation for the affected passengers:
- ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased
- ₹2.5 lakh for those with serious injuries
- ₹50,000 for passengers with minor injuries
Government and Railway Officials Respond
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern over the accident, stating that the CMO is in touch with the Odisha government and the Railways to ensure that all affected passengers receive necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, top railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Khurda Road and the General Manager of ECoR, rushed to the site to oversee relief and restoration efforts.

Railway authorities have arranged a special train to transport stranded passengers to their destinations. Additionally, several trains have been diverted due to the derailment.
