March 12, 2025: Recent reports have emerged alleging that Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, the Quarter Master General of the Bangladesh Army, has been placed under surveillance for purportedly attempting to orchestrate a coup within the military. Sources suggest that Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman ordered the surveillance when he learned of Rahman’s alleged activities aimed at replacing him as the head of the army.
As per reports, Rahman, who had ties with Jamaat-e-Islami and is close to Pakistani diplomats, organized unauthorized meetings with the divisional commanders to garner support against General Waker-Uz-Zaman. In the first week of March 2025, he reportedly summoned one such meeting of major General Officers Commanding (GOCs). But on being discovered by the secretariat of the Army Chief, warnings were given, resulting in a lack of attendance and support for Rahman’s move.
More inquiries showed that throughout January and February 2025, Rahman supposedly met with Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and diplomats from Pakistan on separate occasions. The meetings caused concern among the military’s high command, leading to heightened alertness and monitoring of his actions.
The issue has been worsened by reports that several high-ranking army officials have been implicated in the so-called conspiracy. Some ten GOCs, ranging from Major General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman of the 24th Infantry Division and Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq of the 33rd Infantry Division, have been accused of having assisted the reported attempt at a coup by Rahman, fueling speculation on cracks in the Bangladesh Army from within.
To these claims, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Bangladesh Armed Forces’ official media wing, has outrightly refuted the reports. In a statement released on March 12, 2025, the ISPR described the allegations as “false and planned,” stating that they are part of a calculated disinformation campaign to destabilize the nation and discredit the country’s armed forces. The ISPR reiterated that the Bangladesh Army is still well-disciplined, cohesive, and dedicated to performing its constitutional responsibilities under the able command of the Army Chief. This comes at a time of political turmoil in Bangladesh.
The recent dismissal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power after 15 years has left the country in shambles, with more than 1,000 fatalities resulting from demonstrations against her administration. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has since been reinstated to head an interim administration responsible for reviving democracy in the face of extensive institutional destruction.
The country continues to struggle despite stabilization efforts, with the law and order situation still tenuous, featuring rampant crime and an increasing Islamist influence. The accusations against Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, in combination with the denial by the ISPR, are a manifestation of the complicated and unstable nature of Bangladesh’s political and military climate today.
The country tries to face its internal issues, and the unity and role of its armed forces continue to be pivotal in maintaining stability and a return to democratic rule. Keep Reading Questiqa.in for more updates
