Feb 19, 2025, New Delhi: After the COVID-19 pandemic, later than intended, CBSE is bringing out twice-a-year board exams for class X from 2026 and introducing the CBSE Global Curriculum for 260 foreign schools affiliated to it from 2026-2027.
The education ministry held a discussion led by Dharmendra Pradhan with CBSE officials and heads of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangatham(KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), here a draft scheme for public consultation on next Monday were discussed thoroughly.
Central Board of Secondary Education has announced plans to implement 2 board exams annually, allowing students to take their exam twice and retain their best score. The aim behind this is to create a stress-free learning environment for students.
Dharmendra Pradhan wrote on X saying, “Creating a stress-free learning environment for students has been an important focus of the Government. Examination Improvement and Reform is a key step towards this. Taking this a step forward, held detailed deliberations with Secretary School Education, Central Board of Secondary Education Chairperson and other officials of the Ministry and CBSE over “Conduct of CBSE examinations twice a year”. The draft schema of these deliberations will be placed soon for public consultation by CBSE. This reform is another crucial step towards implementation of key provisions of NEP and will help mitigate exam related stress among students.”
From the academic session 2025-26, CBSE 10th and 12th examinations will be held twice a year.
Ministry Official, “The initiative aims at reducing the high pressure, one-time examination system and provide students with an opportunity to improve their performance without the stress of a single high-stakes test. By offering multiple attempts, CBSE seeks to create a more supportive learning environment that prioritizes conceptual understanding over rote memorisation.”
This reform aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises flexibility and a student centric approach.
The new session of the CBSE Board will start in April. Around this time the notice of the examination will also be issued by the board. Education Minister Pradhan said that creating a stress-free learning environment for students has been the focus of the government.
