March 1 Uttarakhand: The Indian Army successfully rescued and evacuated 14 civilians from an avalanche site in the high-altitude village of Mana, located in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The search and rescue operations have been ongoing for over 24 hours.
Taking advantage of a brief improvement in weather conditions, three injured individuals were airlifted from Mana to Joshimath for urgent medical care using civilian helicopters hired by the Indian Army.
N.K. Joshi, the Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer, stated that the nearest airstrip at Gauchar has been prepared for rescue operations. Although the weather is currently cloudy, helicopters will be deployed as soon as conditions improve.
The avalanche on Friday trapped 55 laborers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). So far, 33 have been rescued. Adverse weather, including rain and snowfall, hindered rescue efforts, forcing operations to be suspended overnight. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is also likely to visit the site. He also updated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ongoing efforts.
He wrote on X, “Honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji spoke over the phone to gather information about the rescue operation being conducted to safely evacuate workers stranded in Mana, Chamoli district. He also obtained detailed information about the rainfall and snowfall situation in the state. During this, Prime Minister ji assured that the central government would provide every possible assistance to deal with any emergency situation.”
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, the trapped laborers hail from various states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. A list of 10 laborers has been released, though their home states remain unspecified. Over 65 personnel are currently involved in the rescue mission.
Mana, situated three kilometers from Badrinath at an altitude of 3,200 meters, is the last village on the India-Tibet border. The challenging terrain and weather conditions have made rescue operations difficult, but efforts continue to save those still trapped. Keep Reading Questiqa.in.
