April 2, Beijing: As the global trade landscape faces potential disruption due to US President Donald Trump’s impending ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, China has extended an offer to increase imports from India and enhance trade collaboration. In an interview with the Chinese state-backed newspaper Global Times, China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, urged Indian businesses to seize the opportunity to expand their presence in the Chinese market.
China Seeks Stronger Trade Ties with India
Ambassador Xu emphasized Beijing’s willingness to strengthen economic cooperation with India, particularly by increasing imports of Indian goods that align with Chinese consumer demand. He also encouraged Indian enterprises to explore trade opportunities in China, urging them to “cross the Himalayas” and take advantage of China’s economic growth.
“We are eager to work with India to enhance practical cooperation in trade and other sectors,” Xu stated. “We welcome more Indian businesses to explore opportunities in China and benefit from the nation’s economic progress.”
Xu also expressed hope that India would create a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese companies, enabling mutually beneficial growth between the two economies.
Diplomatic Overtures Amid Historical Tensions
The call for deeper economic ties comes just a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, highlighting the importance of stronger collaboration between the two nations. This message coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China.
Despite efforts to rebuild ties, tensions remain high following the 2020 border clash in the Himalayas. In response to the conflict, India imposed restrictions on Chinese investments, and these measures remain in place. However, recent diplomatic engagements suggest a gradual warming of relations, with both countries agreeing in January to resume direct flights and improve border patrol mechanisms.
US Tariff Pressure Adds Urgency
China’s push for stronger trade relations with India comes at a critical time, as the US prepares to unveil sweeping new tariffs under Trump’s economic policies. Set to be announced in a high-profile Rose Garden event at the White House, these tariffs aim to protect American industries from what Trump describes as “unfair trade practices.”
The uncertainty surrounding these tariffs has prompted India to adjust its trade policies to maintain strong economic ties with the US. Trump has repeatedly criticized India, referring to it as a “tariff king” and “tariff abuser”, vowing to retaliate against high Indian tariffs. In response, India has been actively negotiating with the US, aiming to resolve tariff-related disputes and finalize an early trade deal.
With the US ramping up its protectionist policies and China seeking to expand trade partnerships, India finds itself in a strategic position. By enhancing economic ties with China, India could benefit from new trade opportunities. At the same time, maintaining a stable relationship with the US remains crucial for its long-term trade strategy.
As geopolitical and economic pressures mount, the coming months will reveal whether India chooses to deepen its engagement with China, continues to align with US trade policies, or attempts a delicate balancing act between both economic giants.
