Conan O’Brien debuted as the host of the 97th Academy Awards, he brought his signature humor. The awards took place at Dolby Theatre, keeping Hollywood’s biggest night lively and unpredictable. Known for his sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, O’Brien wasted no time making a memorable first impression.
From the moment he took the stage, O’Brien ensured the audience knew they were in for an unconventional night. He started his monologue with a classic jab at the Oscars, calling it “Hollywood’s biggest night, which starts at 4 in the afternoon.” He didn’t spare himself, quipping, “I know what you’re thinking: ‘Did Conan not have work done? Seriously. He looks his age.’”
O’Brien also poked fun at Netflix for its frequent price hikes and even made light of his lukewarm reception, imploring the star-studded audience to take their seats after he failed to receive a standing ovation.
However, the night’s biggest surprise came when O’Brien unexpectedly addressed the Indian audience in Hindi. “Bhartiya Logo ko namaskar. Waha subha ho chuki hai to mujhe ummeed hai ki ap crispy nashte ke sath Oscars dekhenge,” he said, which loosely translates to, “Greetings to the people of India. It’s morning there, so I hope you enjoy breakfast with the Oscars.”
The moment sparked a wave of reactions on X. While some fans appreciated O’Brien’s effort to engage with Indian viewers, others found it somewhat out of place. Regardless, the move added a unique touch to his hosting debut.
O’Brien then launched into his signature roast of the Best Picture nominees, making lighthearted jokes about the year’s most acclaimed films. He aimed Conclave, saying, “I’m a Catholic boy; I loved Conclave. If you haven’t seen it, its logline is: a movie about the Catholic Church—but don’t worry.”
He also had a dig at director Sean Baker’s Anora, quipping, “Anora used the f-word 497 times. That’s three more than the record Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist set.”
As the night progressed, O’Brien’s debut as Oscars host was met with mixed reviews. While some lauded his fresh comedic take, others debated whether his humor landed as intended.
