He is going to take over from S. Somanath on January 14, 2025, and has stated his ambitious goal of improving the quality of life for the citizens of India by harnessing advanced technology and making tremendous strides in scientific innovation. As a distinguished rocket propulsion specialist and aerospace engineer, Dr. Narayanan has been instrumental in India’s space efforts, particularly known for his invaluable contributions to the development and refinement of cryogenic propulsion systems that have been an integral part of several space missions.
Dr. Narayanan has more than four decades of experience in rocket and space vehicle propulsion as he joined ISRO in 1984, having held several positions before his designation as Director, of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. These included the very crucial contributions that he made to India’s prime programs – the CE20 Cryogenic Engine for GSLV Mk III, as well as to the Aditya Spacecraft.
Dr. Narayanan is a specialist with wide-ranging expertise in rocket and spacecraft propulsion-a very niche area of specialization in aerospace engineering. Throughout his illustrious career, he has won numerous accolades and received various prestigious awards, which highlight his outstanding contributions to this field of study.
The newly appointed Chairman of ISRO, Dr. Narayanan said that his agenda would include further expansion of the Indian space presence and international collaborations with clear missions ahead of it, like Chandrayaan-4 and Gaganyaan, India’s human spaceflight program.
