12 May UP: A powerful earthquake shook some areas of Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday morning, waking up residents from their sleep. The quake was experienced at 2:41 AM, sending people running out of their houses in panic. The earthquake, whose epicenter was in the Tibet region, registered 5.7 on the Richter scale and was caused by a depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were experienced not only in UP but also in neighboring Bihar. Residents of high-rise buildings in cities such as Noida and Ghaziabad were terrified and evacuated their buildings at once. Until now, there have been no reports of injuries or extensive damage, but there were scenes of panic and pandemonium.
Most residents took to social media to share their experiences and videos. Some labeled the tremors as slight, while others characterized them as frightful. Scientists indicate that the Tibet-Himalayan region is extremely earthquake-prone, thereby increasing the possibility of such incidents in the region.
The authorities recommend that people should immediately walk to open and safe spaces when earthquakes occur. People living in high-rise apartments are advised not to use elevators and, instead, exit through staircases safely.
