Farmers declare Punjab Bandh on Dec 30 amid Dallewal’s health deterioration.

Dec 19 Thursday, New Delhi: Farmers in Punjab have declared a Punjab bandh (shutdown) on December 30, 2024, to press for their demands, including a legally guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and comprehensive debt relief. This decision follows a series of protests, especially the ‘Rail Roko’ agitation on December 18, which disrupted train services across the state.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have called for a complete shutdown in Punjab on December 30. Sarwan Singh Pandher, a leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, stated, “A call for a Punjab Bandh is being given for December 30, against the atrocities of the Central government. Emergency services will remain operational.”

Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Hunger Strike

Amid these developments, there are growing apprehensions over the health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur), who had gone on a fast-to-death at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana. His hunger strike has entered the 23rd day as of December 18, with doctors warning of a potential multiple organ failure.

The Supreme Court has shown concern over Dallewal’s health, asking the Punjab government to ensure immediate medical attention. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said, “We direct the State Authorities to take all necessary steps and ensure that the medical aid of hospitalization, as per the doctors’ advice, is provided to Mr. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, without any delay.” On the 24th day, the leader fainted and vomited during the afternoon. A team of doctors is treating him.

Farmers’ Demands

The protesting farmers have presented several key demands, including:

  • Guaranteed MSP: They want a law that ensures that there will always be a minimum price of all crops to ensure the incomes of farmers are not disrupted by market fluctuations.
  • Debt Waiver: Total debt relief measures should be implemented to ease the financial burdens of farmers.
  • Pension for Farmers and Farm Labourers: Pensions to ensure that they do not suffer financially in their later years.
  • Withdrawal of Police Cases: Withdrawal of all cases against farmers that occurred during previous agitations.
  • Justice for the Lakhimpur Kheri Victims: Justice to the victims who were brutalized during the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri incident.
These are some of the demands the farmers have in order to receive economic security as well as be treated right within the agriculture sector.

So far, there has been no official response from the central government on the issue of Punjab Bandh or renewed demands by farmers. The previous agitations in 2020–2021 led to the withdrawal of the controversial farm laws, but most of the main demands of the farmers are still not met.

Conclusion

Punjab Bandh Call on December 30 Underlines Persistent Discontent Among Region’s Farmers. Their demands for guaranteed MSP, debt relief, and similar measures reflect the difficulties and problems of the agricultural fraternity. The deteriorating health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal presents an added urgency to the scene, with the Supreme Court intervening in his well-being. The bandh to take place will severely affect the daily life routine in Punjab, and the national focus will be drawn toward these farmers and their struggle for economic justice.le for economic justice.
