Frank Walter Steinmeier’s official X account got hacked with the account seemingly transformed into a handle belonging to the Bihar government’s Water Resources Department. This incident has raised a few concerns, but there’s been no official communication from the German authorities concerning the breach.
The hack was first flagged by multiple X users when the account’s username was changed to @adolf_gov, with its bio changed to a controversial message: “Make Germany Great Again,” mimicking former US President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.” Furthermore, the description stated, “Decentralisation is what will help me to implement my plans,” a statement likely designed for political speech.
The verified X account of BRICS News was one of the first to report the incident, pointing out that the hacked account belonged to the German president. A screenshot shared by BRICS News revealed the account’s original handle @FrankWalterGER, which had been hijacked by the hackers. At the time of the hack, the account had over 57,000 followers.
The hackers took the audacious step of posting an image of Adolf Hitler alongside Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, with a caption that read: “Remember: when you stand together, when your goal is the same, when your spirit is unshakable, nothing can stop you. #MGGA.” The controversial post was quickly removed from the account.
Following the hack, the account was briefly suspended by X before it resurfaced with the name and description changed to reflect the Water Resources Department of Bihar, though it continued to use the original @FrankWalterGER handle. The account has since attracted an additional 2,000 followers, bringing the total to 59,900.
This incident highlights the growing issue of account security on social media platforms and serves as a reminder of the potential for cyberattacks on high-profile individuals and government officials. The German government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the breach, and it remains unclear whether further actions will be taken against those responsible.
