February 12: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), the maker of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas,’ has assured that it will soon commence deliveries to the Indian Air Force (IAF) after resolving technical challenges. The assurance comes in response to concerns reportedly raised by IAF Chief, Air Marshal AP Singh, regarding delays in the aircraft’s delivery.
Speaking at the Aero India 2025 event in Bengaluru, HAL Chairman and Managing Director D K Sunil addressed the issue, emphasizing that the company has taken necessary steps to ensure timely production and delivery. “The delay is not simple, but we have now promised that we will have all the structures ready. We have conveyed this in multiple meetings at different levels. Once the engines are available, the aircraft will start rolling out,” Sunil stated.
The LCA Tejas is a significant component of India’s defense modernization program, designed to strengthen the IAF’s fleet with an advanced, lightweight, multi-role fighter jet. While the program has faced delays due to supply chain constraints and technical refinements, HAL remains confident that the production and delivery schedules will be met.
Sunil reaffirmed that HAL is fully committed to addressing the IAF’s concerns, ensuring that the aircraft will be ready for deployment at the earliest. “The concern is well understood. There is no doubt about that, and as a team, all of us are focused on ensuring delivery,” he added.
The IAF has placed a substantial order for Tejas Mk1A, an upgraded version of the aircraft with enhanced avionics, radar, and weaponry. The timely delivery of these jets is crucial for India’s defense preparedness, particularly as the country looks to bolster its indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
With HAL’s renewed commitment, the IAF is expected to receive the much-anticipated Tejas jets soon, further strengthening India’s aerial combat capabilities.
