Belfast, March 8, 2025:
On Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the new Consulate General of India in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This movie aims to improve India’s diplomatic footprint in the region, along with catering to the increasing Indian diaspora
During his speech, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of Belfast as a strategic link between India’s UK and European policies. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding diplomatic outreach, stating that setting up new consulates was a global priority to support Indian communities abroad.
He stated that the decision to open the Belfast consulate was made rather quickly with the outline being put forth to the cabinet just six weeks after the Modi government’s re-election in 2024. This consulate will be useful in promoting trade, technology, and culture as well as attending to the needs of the Indian diaspora.
Jaishankar expressed optimism about finalizing a free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK and the European Union soon, reinforcing India’s growing economic ties with both regions. He underlined the strengthening India-UK partnership in various sectors, including technology and business.
“We see this consulate as a way of pursuing our twin engagements with the UK and Europe, while also supporting the aspirations of this region and serving our community,” he stated.
The inauguration is part of Jaishankar’s official visit to the UK and Ireland from March 4 to March 9, aimed at deepening bilateral ties and fostering people-to-people connections. The new consulate in Belfast is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s diplomatic and trade objectives in Europe.
