Reimagine Workplace Equality
In India, while the labor force participation rate for women increased to 41.7% in 2023-2024 from 37% in 2022-2023, projections indicate that by 2047, the country may still fall short by 145 million women workers needed to achieve the targeted $30 trillion GDP. This underscores the need for more inclusive policies and opportunities for women in the workforce.
Fight for equal pay and leadership roles. Women do not have to struggle for something that should already be theirs-fairness. In a recent move, Larsen and Toubro’s chairman S N Subramanyam brought in a one-day menstrual leave facility a month for women employees of the company. This was announced at the Women’s Day celebrations at the Powai Office in Mumbai.
Additional companies like Swiggy and Zomato have declared these leaves. The question arises are these leaves enough? Along with these paid leaves, women crave emotional support and someone who can be an empathic listener.
Share the Mental Load at Home

Household duties ought not disproportionately burden women. Share the burden! Support men participating equally in childcare, housework, and affective labor. Normalize discussion regarding gender roles at home and work against stereotypic expectations.
Foster Financial Independence
Educate women and young girls in money skills, investing, and building wealth. Empower women’s enterprises—buy, invest, and publicize their services. Offer financial support or counseling to women from disadvantaged groups to enable them to escape economic dependence.
Prioritize Women’s Health and Well-being
Provide women with access to quality healthcare, including mental health care. Support workplace wellness initiatives that deal with issues such as burnout and work-life balance. Foster open conversation about women’s reproductive health, menstruation, and menopause without shame.
Educate and Empower the Next Generation
Raise children in a community where respect for women is not imparted but demonstrated. Incorporate gender equality in the curriculums of schools, such that both girls and boys comprehend and admire the other’s place. Debunk sexism on TV shows, literature, and day-to-day conversation.
Be an Ally, Every Day
Interrupt when you observe sexism, harassment, or discrimination—at the workplace, out on the streets, or even at home. Teach girls and women to dream big and believe in their aspirations, whether that’s launching a business, seeking public office, or having a non-traditional career. Express unconditional support not only on March 8 but year-round.
