March 1, Kerala: In a chilling revelation, Kerala police have uncovered new details about the gruesome murders committed by 23-year-old Afan, who killed five people, including his grandmother, uncle, aunt, 13-year-old brother, and girlfriend, in Venjaramoodu, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday. According to officials, Afan, who was drowning in a debt of Rs 65 lakh, initially planned to die by suicide along with his mother and brother. However, when his mother refused, he decided to kill his family members and girlfriend, believing she “would be alone without him.”
Afan’s rampage began at his home, where he attacked his mother, leaving her critically injured. Assuming she was dead, he proceeded to his grandmother’s house, where he killed her and stole a gold necklace. He then went to his uncle and aunt’s home and murdered them as well. Returning to his house, Afan killed his younger brother and girlfriend, Farsana, before surrendering at the Venjaramoodu police station.
Police revealed that Afan’s family had been under immense financial strain, with creditors harassing them over the massive debt. Afan’s father, who works in Saudi Arabia, claimed he was unaware of the extent of the debt, stating he only knew about Rs 15 lakh owed by his son. Afan had even pawned Farsana’s gold necklace to repay part of the debt, and his father had sent Rs 60,000 to retrieve it.
Superintendent of Police KS Sudarshan stated that Afan’s actions were driven by desperation and a warped sense of responsibility. “He killed Farsana because he believed she would not be able to live without him,” said Sudarshan. The police are also investigating whether there were other motives behind the killings, apart from the financial burden. Afan’s unusual behavior after surrendering has raised questions about his mental state, and he will be questioned in the presence of mental health experts.
Afan’s mother, Shemina, initially told police she had not been attacked by her son and had fallen from her bed. She was unaware of the murders he committed after assaulting her. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many questioning how a young man could carry out such a heinous act.
As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on understanding Afan’s mental state and the circumstances that led to this tragic incident. The case highlights the devastating consequences of financial stress and the need for mental health support in such situations.
