A major power outage hit Nairobi on Tuesday evening, plunging thousands of residents into darkness. The blackout began around 7 PM local time and impacted key areas, including business districts, residential neighborhoods, and public transport systems.
The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) confirmed that the disruption was caused by a fault in a main transmission line. Engineers have been dispatched to fix the problem, but officials caution that it might take several hours before full electricity service is restored.
The outage led to significant disruptions:
- Traffic lights went dark, causing congestion in busy streets.
- Public services faced interruptions.
- Hospitals and critical centers relied on backup generators to maintain operations.
Residents expressed frustration as they resorted to using candles and flashlights. In addition, local businesses experienced financial losses due to halted operations and spoiled goods.
Kenya Power has urged citizens to conserve electricity once the power returns and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue promptly. Authorities are also investigating the root cause to prevent similar incidents in the future.
