New Delhi, India – The Registrar General of India has introduced a new rule requiring all newborn babies to have birth certificates before they are discharged from hospitals. This rule aims to ensure that every child has a legal identity from the moment they leave the hospital.
Starting from 2023, the birth certificates will be mostly digital. Digital birth certificates will make it easier for parents to access various government services for their children. These services include:
- Enrolling in schools
- Applying for health benefits
- Obtaining other important official documents
The Registrar General emphasized that hospitals must complete the birth registration process on time. This timely registration will help prevent delays in obtaining important benefits and services for newborns.
The new mandate is expected to:
- Improve the accuracy of birth data in India
- Help in better planning of health and social services for children
Many hospitals have already started adopting this digital process to comply with the new rules.
Parents are encouraged to ensure they receive the digital birth certificate for their baby before leaving the hospital. This certificate will serve as an important legal document throughout the child’s life.
