Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh — A tragic incident unfolded at an unregistered private hospital in Shravasti district where a pregnant woman died following surgery, prompting police action against three doctors and a recommendation from the district administration to seal the facility.
The woman, identified as Manna Devi, was admitted to Nandini Hospital in Shahpur Jot under the Kotwali Dehat police station limits on March 29. According to her brother Suraj Tiwari, she underwent a surgical procedure but tragically passed away the following day, allegedly due to medical negligence.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Sanjay Sharma confirmed that the hospital was operating without proper registration. Acting on Tiwari’s complaint, the administration issued a notice to the hospital’s operator, Dr. D.K. Vishwakarma, and summoned the involved doctors along with all relevant medical records.
“The nursing home is currently shut, and a formal recommendation has been made to seal the premises,” said Dr. Sharma. “However, since the hospital is part of a residential complex, we cannot proceed with sealing until we have met with the operator.”
As the hospital failed to respond to administrative notices, a surprise inspection was carried out by a team from the state health department on April 3. Officials reported that upon spotting the government vehicles, Dr. Vishwakarma locked the facility and fled the scene, further raising suspicions about the hospital’s operations.
Following an investigation, the police registered a case on April 8 against Dr. Vishwakarma, along with two other medical professionals—Dr. R.K. Singh and Dr. Preeti Sharma—under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence.
The case has highlighted serious concerns about unauthorized medical practices in the region and has intensified calls for stricter regulation and oversight of private healthcare facilities.
