During the call on 27 January Trump spoke about immigration and stressed the importance of India buying more American-made security equipment and fair bilateral trading ties. Trump had previously confirmed that Modi would be visiting the White House in February, following their first phone conversation since Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The meeting will have talks between Modi and Trump to cover a range of topics, including expanding and deepening cooperation, regional security issues, and the importance of increasing India’s procurement of American-made security equipment.

India is also keen to avoid tariffs that Trump has threatened in the past, citing India’s high tariffs on US products. This meeting is seen as an opportunity for the two leaders to establish a personal rapport and pave the way for deeper collaboration with the two countries despite potential sticking points such as trade and illegal immigration.
