Solapur, April 19, 2025:
The medical fraternity and residents of Solapur were left in shock after renowned neurophysician Dr. Shirish Valsangkar (70) died by suicide at his Modi residence on Friday night. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when Dr. Valsangkar, during dinner with his family, suddenly went to the bathroom and shot himself with his gun.
Despite immediate first aid administered by his son, Dr. Ashwin Valsangkar, the veteran doctor passed away around 9:30 pm during treatment at the same hospital where he had treated many patients. Police Commissioner M. Rajkumar confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the extreme step.
Dr. Valsangkar was Solapur’s first neurologist, who had revolutionized neurology in Solapur. He established a state-of-the-art hospital, offering advanced neurological care. He was honored with the Best Neurologist Award by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis for his contribution to neurological services. Known for his dedication, he often traveled across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana in his helicopter to treat patients.
Having recently retired due to age, Dr. Valsangkar’s sudden death has left the city mourning. Colleagues and patients remember him as a compassionate doctor who transformed neurological healthcare in Solapur. Authorities are probing potential reasons, including health or personal struggles, behind the tragedy.
