Sahibganj Train Accident: 3 Dead, 4 Injured in Goods Train Collision

Sahibganj, Jharkhand, 1 April 2025: A tragic railway accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when two goods trains collided on the Barhet MGR railway line in Sahibganj district, Jharkhand. The collision, which took place near Sonajodi in the Barhet police station area at around 3:00 AM, resulted in the death of three people, including the train drivers, while four CISF personnel sustained severe injuries.

According to reports, a coal goods train was traveling from Lalmatia in Godda, Jharkhand, to Farakka NTPC in West Bengal when it rammed into another stationary goods train on the loop line. The impact of the crash was so severe that five wagons derailed, and a fire broke out in the engine and coal-laden compartments. Fire engines were rushed to the spot, and rescue operations are still underway.

Casualties and Injuries

The horrific accident led to the instant death of two train drivers, who were burned beyond recognition. The deceased have been identified as Ambuj Mahto, a resident of Bokaro Sector-9 in Jharkhand, and Kaleshwar Mal from West Bengal. The driver of the second goods train, GK Nath, suffered severe burn injuries and is undergoing treatment.

In addition to the drivers, five other individuals were injured in the accident. The injured have been identified as Uday Mandal (West Bengal), Israul Sheikh, Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Ghosh, and Shahid. All injured individuals were immediately taken to the Community Health Center in Barhet, receiving medical attention.

Rescue Operations and Investigation

Following the accident, the railway administration and NTPC officials promptly reached the site to assess the situation. The fire brigade worked tirelessly to bring the flames under control, preventing further damage. However, railway authorities estimate losses amounting to crores of rupees due to the destruction of train wagons, infrastructure, and cargo.

Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that the coal-laden train mistakenly entered the loop line, resulting in a head-on collision with the stationary train.
