Industrialist Harsh Goenka has sparked a discussion on social media by highlighting the financial losses by certain judges on the reality television series Shark Tank India. The show, which allows entrepreneurs to pitch their businesses to well-known investors, has come under scrutiny as some of these “sharks” reportedly face significant financial setbacks.
Sharing his views on X, Goenka expressed his continued admiration for the show but pointed out that some sharks struggle financially. “I still love watching #SharkTankIndia,” he wrote. “But it seems some of our sharks are still navigating choppy waters. There’s more ‘bleeding’ in the tank than I thought!”
Goenka also shared figures detailing the reported losses of the companies run by these investors. According to his post, Vineeta Singh’s Sugar Cosmetics reported a loss of Rs 68 crore, Aman Gupta’s boAt suffered losses of Rs 54 crore, Anupam Mittal’s Shaadi.com faced a loss of Rs 18 crore, and Peyush Bansal’s Lenskart recorded a loss of Rs 10 crore.
In a previous post on January 22, Goenka had compared the show to the Hollywood classic Jaws, suggesting that the business world can be just as cutthroat. “Whenever I think of sharks, I think of the movie ‘Jaws’ and bleeding!” he quipped, further fueling debate among netizens.
However, Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com, was quick to respond, calling the data “superficial, biased, and incomplete.” He defended the sharks, emphasizing that losses do not necessarily indicate business failure. “I know you meant it in jest, so with all due respect sir, I think you reacted to what appears to be superficial, biased, and incomplete data,” Mittal wrote. He added, “Happy to learn from stalwarts, but just to clarify, like you, the sharks don’t bleed red, we bleed blue and that’s why we do what we do.”
The discussion has since sparked widespread debate on social media about the realities of entrepreneurship and investment, with many questioning whether financial losses should be seen as setbacks or part of the journey to long-term success.
