26 April, Attari-Wagah: A high-voltage scene unfolded at the Attari-Wagah border on Wednesday when a Pakistani woman sat down in protest, threatening to consume poison if not allowed to return to Pakistan.
This followed the recent terror attack on visitors in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22. Upon investigation, which discovered connections to Pakistan, the Indian government rushed. Among the major choices, all Pakistani nationals in India were directed to vacate India within 48 hours.
While hundreds went to the border, tensions mounted as some of the women were denied permission to go because they held Indian passports. One was Afshin Jahangir, born in Jodhpur, India, but married and settled in Pakistan.
She had traveled to meet her family and now longed to go back home.
Upset, she informed the media persons,
“I have to go back to Pakistan. I have a genuine visa. If I am intercepted, I’ll sit here as a protest. even consume poison if need be.”
Afshin said that she had come to India on a 45-day visa. But because she has an Indian passport, she was not let through the border, even when she made pleas from the heart.
A day after the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a high-level CCS meeting. Of the five key decisions taken against Pakistan, one was clear: no Pakistani citizen would be permitted to remain in India under the present circumstances.
