Slum Student Beats IITians in Secret AI Challenge

In a story straight out of a movie script, 17-year-old Sameer Shaikh, a student from a slum in Mumbai’s Dharavi, has achieved the unthinkable — winning a hidden Artificial Intelligence coding challenge that had silently roped in coders from across India, including top-tier IITians and tech graduates from elite institutes.

Sameer, who studies at a government-run school and lives in a modest 10×10 room with his parents and two siblings, has stunned the Indian tech community and beyond, not just by winning, but by topping a challenge many didn’t even know existed.

A Hidden Hackathon, a Surprise Winner

Organised anonymously by a Bengaluru-based AI startup as part of a stealth talent hunt, the coding challenge was designed to find “raw, untapped genius” from across India, without name, background, or degree playing a role. The contest was shared quietly through Discord servers, niche coding groups, and Telegram channels under the title: “Code For Change: AI Brainstorm 2025.”

No credentials were required; only a unique coding ID was issued per participant. Among the over 9,000 coders who participated, 71% were engineering students from IITs, NITs, and IIITs. But the winner, who used the ID “SilentBot_07”, was none other than a Class 12 science student from Dharavi who taught himself coding on a second-hand mobile phone.

Meet the Genius from Dharavi

“I had no laptop. Just a Redmi phone and free Wi-Fi near a tea shop,” Sameer says with a laugh that hides years of grit. “I used to go there after school to watch YouTube tutorials and practice Python, C++, and ML basics on free coding apps.”

Sameer’s father, a tailor who earns around ₹9,000 a month, couldn’t afford expensive coaching or gadgets. But that didn’t stop Sameer from dreaming big. “I didn’t have books, so I used ChatGPT and Google. Whatever I could learn, I tried.”

With borrowed earphones and broken notebooks, Sameer began learning AI concepts through free platforms like GitHub, Coursera (audit mode), and Khan Academy. He even joined online communities under fake names, fearing bias due to his background.

The Challenge That Changed His Life

The “Code For Change” challenge consisted of five escalating AI tasks — from building basic neural nets to solving real-world image recognition problems using limited data. Competitors were judged anonymously on accuracy, creativity, efficiency, and scalability.

Sameer not only solved all five but added an innovative reinforcement learning twist that stunned the evaluators.

“He solved problems in a way even our interns hadn’t thought of,” said Ameya Rathi, co-founder of the organising AI firm (still under stealth mode). “When we traced the winner, we thought there must be some mistake. But it wasn’t. It was Sameer — a boy from Dharavi with zero formal training in AI.”

IIT Students React

The result sent ripples across tech campuses. “It’s humbling,” said Nikhil Jha, a final-year AI student from IIT Bombay who finished 19th in the competition. “This proves talent doesn’t wear a badge or a brand. We all have a lot to learn — not just from books, but from people like Sameer.”

What Happens Next

After the reveal, the organising company not only awarded Sameer a ₹5 lakh scholarship but also offered him a fully sponsored internship in Bengaluru with housing, mentorship, and access to high-end computing infrastructure.

Sameer’s story has caught the attention of several global figures in tech. A tweet by former Google India head Rajan Anandan called him “India’s real digital future.”

Even the Maharashtra Education Ministry is reportedly considering felicitating him for his achievement, while NGOs and tech companies are lining up with offers for further support.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Sameer isn’t basking in the fame. Instead, he wants to start a coding club in Dharavi to teach kids like him the basics of AI, robotics, and app development. “There are hundreds like me who are smarter but don’t have phones or English skills,” he says. “They just need one chance.”

His story is not just about personal success — it’s a crack in the glass ceiling, a reminder that genius can sprout from the narrowest lanes and darkest corners, so long as curiosity burns bright.

In a city known for Bollywood dreams and financial powerhouses, Sameer’s victory is a poignant reminder that the next tech revolution might not be coming from a conference room in Powai or a dorm at MIT, but from a Wi-Fi corner outside a chai stall in Dharavi.

Sameer’s journey may have just begun, but India — and perhaps the world — will be watching closely.
