New Delhi, Feb 4 – A breach of privilege notice was filed on Monday by a group of BJP MPs from the tribal community against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for allegedly making “derogatory and slanderous” remarks about President Droupadi Murmu.
In unison, the MPs led by Sumer Singh Solanki met Chairman Jagdeep Dhankharclaim that these comments truly disrespect the office of the President. and demanded disciplinary action against Gandhi, claiming her comments had lowered the dignity of the President’s office.
The notice was filed in response to a viral video in which Sonia was purportedly heard saying, “The poor lady, the President, was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing,” after Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament on Friday. The BJP MPs accused Sonia of displaying an “elitist and anti-tribal mindset” and failing to understand the struggles of tribal communities.
In their notice, the MPs argued that Sonia’s remarks were “unparliamentary, derogatory, and demeaning” and called for serious action. “It is with deep concern that we highlight this statement, which appears to demean the stature and dignity of the President of India, the highest constitutional authority of our nation,” they stated.
22 tribal parliamentarians, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, submitted another breach of privilege notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla against Independent MP Pappu Yadav for his alleged insulting remarks about President Murmu.
The controversy has intensified the political tussle between the BJP and Congress, with the ruling party demanding an apology from Sonia Gandhi. Meanwhile, Congress has yet to respond formally to the allegations.
