February 28, Nepal: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley early Friday morning, with its epicenter located in the Sindhupalchowk district. The tremors were also felt in several parts of India, including West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

According to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. However, other agencies, such as the German Research Center for Geosciences, recorded it at 5.6, while India’s National Centre for Seismology and the US Geological Survey both reported it as 5.5. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). DIG of Nepal Police, Dinesh Kumar Acharya, confirmed that there were no reports of deaths, injuries, or major infrastructure damage in the affected areas.

Nepal lies in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, falling under Seismic Zones IV and V, making it highly prone to earthquakes. The Himalayan nation has a history of devastating quakes, with the worst occurring in 2015 when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake claimed over 9,000 lives and destroyed more than a million structures.

In India, residents in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur reported feeling strong tremors. Rambabu Chaudhary, a local resident, shared, “I was asleep when I felt the bed shaking, and the fan was moving too. We were terrified and rushed out of the house immediately.” Another resident, Saurav Singh, recounted, “We were asleep when the tremors hit. When I woke up, everything was vibrating—the bed, fan, and even the windows. I immediately called my mother and brother to alert them.”

The earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. While this incident did not result in significant damage, it has heightened awareness about the need for preparedness in earthquake-prone areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents are urged to remain cautious and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.

In conclusion, the earthquake in Nepal and the tremors felt across India underscore the importance of robust disaster management systems and public awareness to mitigate risks in the future.
