Tensions Flare at India-Bangladesh Border Over Fencing Dispute

Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh, 13 Jan – On Sunday, Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express concern about the activities BSF has been conducting over the Indo-Bangla border. It has been alleged that India is constructing barbed wire fences at five locations on the border, which causes further unrest from Bangladeshi officials.

Jashim Uddin, the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary expressed strong objections during his meeting with Verma by stating that these actions are a breach of bilateral agreements. “These unauthorized actions undermine the spirit of cooperation and friendly relations between our two nations”. Uddin said, urging India to adhere to agreed-upon protocols.

Verma said that India is on board with modifying the crime-free border, but it will need the supervision of the BSF and Bangladesh’s border patrol. “It is understood that the border is to be fenced for security, and this is expected to be done cooperatively.” This along with further statements made during the talks would smoothen out the concerns ” Verma stated.

Tensions escalated when the BSF attempted to install fences at Sukdevpur in Malda’s Baishnabnagar, which met fierce resistance from the BGB and the locals. Following a flag meeting between the two forces, construction was temporarily halted. Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury attributed the border disputes to “unequal agreements” signed by the previous government with other parties,’ and inter-border management.

Uddin demanded a thorough investigation and swift action against those responsible, condemning such incidents as unacceptable.

Pointing towards another problem, Bangladesh highlighted the recent BSF killing of a Bangladeshi citizen in Sunamganj. ‘Such incidents are unacceptable and we seek a thorough investigation and swift action against those responsible’, Uddin stated.

The foreign ministry expressed hope that the upcoming BGB-BSF Director General-level talks would address these issues comprehensively. “Both nations must work together to resolve these challenges and strengthen bilateral ties,” the ministry stated.
