YouTube has removed over 9.5 million videos between October and December 2024 from its platform. Approximately 3 million of these videos were uploaded by Indian creators, making India the top contributor for the removed content. This action was taken as a part of YouTube’s consistent campaign to create safer and more transparent platforms for users from different parts of the world.

As per Youtube’s report, the highest number of deleted videos violated child safety policies, with over 5 million videos flagged as harmful for children. These included content featuring dangerous stunts, harassment, and other inappropriate material involving minors.

Aside from child safety violations, YouTube removed videos that included hate speech, misinformation, harassment, and violent content, all of which go against the platform’s strict content policies. To enforce these regulations, YouTube relies on a combination of AI-powered detection systems and human moderators, which help identify and remove harmful content before it reaches a large audience.

4.8 Million Channels and 1.2 Billion Comments Deleted

In addition to removing videos, YouTube deleted 4.8 million channels, most of which were involved in spam and fraudulent activities. When a channel is deleted, all associated videos are automatically removed from the platform. Due to this large-scale action, approximately 54 lakh additional videos were taken down along with the channels. YouTube deleted 1.2 billion comments, the majority of which were spam-related. Some comments were also removed for containing hate speech, harassment, and threats. This action is part of YouTube’s broader initiative to enhance user safety and prevent the spread of misinformation.
