Leh, Ladakh, 24 March:
A mild earthquake of magnitude 3.6 struck the Leh-Ladakh region in the early hours of Monday, triggering brief panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 4:32:58 am IST on March 24, with its epicenter recorded at 34.35 degrees north latitude and 78.06 degrees east longitude. The earthquake’s depth was measured at 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface.
As soon as the tremors were felt, many residents woke up startled and rushed out of their homes fearing a stronger impact. However, no reports of casualties or property damage have emerged so far. Authorities have assured that the situation is under control and are closely monitoring developments.
Ladakh, situated near the Himalayan mountain range, is a seismically active region and frequently experiences minor tremors. Experts suggest that while such low-intensity earthquakes are common, the area remains vulnerable to larger seismic events. Despite the mild nature of this earthquake, disaster management teams and local administration stay on high alert.
In a post on ACT, the NCS confirmed the seismic activity and provided details about the earthquake’s magnitude, location, and depth. Following the tremors, the Meteorological Department and seismologists have been assessing the situation to ensure that no secondary hazards arise.
Local authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and not fall prey to rumors. They have also advised people to report any unusual incidents or structural damages immediately. Officials continue to stress the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone regions and encourage residents to follow safety protocols.
Although this earthquake was mild and did not cause harm, experts caution that the region is susceptible to future seismic activities. They recommend that residents stay informed about safety measures and be prepared for emergencies. For now, normalcy has been restored, and daily activities in Leh Ladakh continue without disruption.
