Andaman and Nicobar Islands, March 26, 2025:
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman Sea on Wednesday morning. The tremors were recorded at 75 kilometers below the ocean surface. No loss of life or property damage has been reported.
On Monday, strong tremors with a similar magnitude of 4.4 and a depth of 75 kilometers were also felt in the Andaman Sea. The region, known for its seismic activity, frequently experiences earthquakes due to the movement of tectonic plates.
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Bay of Bengal recently. Experts highlight that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands fall in a highly seismically active zone, making them prone to frequent seismic disturbances.
The National Center for Seismology shared information about the latest earthquake on X, detailing the time and intensity of the tremors.
Meanwhile, tremors have also been reported in China’s earthquake-prone regions. However, no major damage or casualties have been recorded in either country.
China is particularly vulnerable to seismic activity due to its geographical positioning between the colliding Asian and Indian tectonic plates. The country has a history of devastating earthquakes, the most severe being the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province on May 12, 2008, which claimed 87,000 lives and left millions homeless.
Similarly, India is also susceptible to earthquakes, particularly in the Himalayan region, where constant geological movements occur due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and the northeastern region are highly earthquake-prone zones.
Geologists emphasize the importance of adhering to seismic safety standards and vigilance to mitigate potential damage. The government and disaster management agencies continue to conduct awareness campaigns to prepare communities for emergencies and minimize risks in the event of future earthquakes.
