Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest at Mauritius’ National Day celebrations next month, Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced while addressing the National Assembly on Friday. Ramgoolam highlighted the honor of hosting such a distinguished global leader.
Mauritius celebrates its National Day on March 12 every year to commemorate its independence from British rule in 1968. The 2024 celebrations mark the 57th anniversary of this historic event. Despite his demanding schedule, Ramgoolam expressed pleasure in confirming Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the event.
“In the context of the celebrations of the 57th anniversary of the Independence of our country, I have great pleasure in informing the House that, following my invitation, His Excellency, Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the guest of honor for our National Day celebrations,” Ramgoolam stated.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to further strengthen the longstanding diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between India and Mauritius. The two nations share historical and ethnic ties, with a significant percentage of Mauritius’ population tracing its roots back to India. Over the years, India has played a pivotal role in the development of Mauritius through various assistance programs, trade agreements, and strategic partnerships.
During his visit, PM Modi is expected to engage in high-level discussions with Mauritian leadership, participate in cultural events, and address the gathering during the National Day ceremony. His visit is expected to enhance ongoing collaborative efforts in sectors like trade, infrastructure, education, and maritime security.
The visit also underscores India’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations with key allies in the Indian Ocean region. Given Mauritius’ strategic location, India has continued to support the island nation in economic and defense initiatives.
With PM Modi’s presence, the upcoming National Day celebrations in Mauritius are anticipated to be of great diplomatic significance, reinforcing the strong bilateral partnership between the two nations.
