PM Modi to back Mauritius sovereignty over Chagos, upgrade security ties

March 11, Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port Louis Today, March 11, 2025, for a two-day state visit to Mauritius. This is his second visit to the island nation since 2015. This visit underscores the two countries’ deep-rooted historical, cultural, and strategic ties.

When he arrived at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed by his Mauritian counterpart Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The welcome was greeted with a traditional Bihari cultural performance of Geet Gawai, which is a Bhojpuri musical tradition of UNESCO-recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This was used to underscore the common cultural heritage and the robust people-to-people links between Mauritius and India.

Participation in Celebrations of National Day

Indian Prime Minister Modi is the guest of honor during Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebration on 12th March. A formation of the Indian defense forces a warship from the Indian Navy and a formation of Akash Ganga, the Indian Air Force’s skydiving unit, will represent India’s strength in terms of defense ties.

Inauguration of Indian-sponsored Projects

While he is on a visit, Prime Minister Modi, along with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, will dedicate more than 20 projects funded by India. In particular, they will inaugurate the Civil Services College and an Area Health Centre, both of which were built through Indian grant support. Maritime Security: A technical accord between the Indian Navy and the Mauritian government regarding white shipping information exchange to improve maritime security in the region of the Indian Ocean.

Financial Intelligence: A memorandum of understanding between India’s Enforcement Directorate and Mauritius’ Financial Crime Commission to strengthen cooperation in the fight against money laundering and other financial crimes.

Ocean Research: A memorandum of understanding between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and the Prime Minister’s Office in Mauritius for the establishment of an agreement for coordination in maritime zone management and ocean observation and research.

Assistance to Mauritius’ Sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago

India has long been backing Mauritius’s claims on the Chagos Archipelago, comprising an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, including strategic island Diego Garcia which hosts a major U.S.-British military base.
