Six Congress MLAs in Rajasthan were suspended from the Assembly after a minister referred to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as “aapki dadi” (your grandmother), leading to a significant uproar. The suspended MLAs, including the state Congress president, spent the night inside the Assembly in protest.

The row erupted during Question Hour when Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot said, “In the 2023-24 budget, also like always, you named the scheme (on working women’s hostels) after your ‘dadi’ (grandmother) Indira Gandhi.”

Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully objected to the minister’s remarks and demanded that the “inappropriate word” be removed from the record. Several Congress MLAs started sloganeering and moved towards the well. The House was adjourned multiple times before the government’s chief whip, Jogeshwar Gaarg, proposed suspending the following six Congress MLAs for the remainder of the budget session: Govind Singh Dotarasa, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Jakir Hussain Gasavat, Hakeem Ali Khan and Sanjay Kumar.

The suspended MLAs, along with other Congres leaders, spent the night inside the Assembly premises in protest. They brought quilts and mattresses to stay overnight. The government defended the minister’s remarks, stating that there was nothing unparliamentary about using the word “dadi.” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel and MoS Jawarsingh Bedham reached the Assembly to convince the protesting MLAs. Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Criticized the government’s actions, accusing them of trying to suppress the opposition’s voice and hide their failures.
