Mahayuti Secures a Landslide Victory in Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections

The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition won convincingly in the 2024 Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections with an array of 234 out of 288 seats. Such a magnificent majority would thus endow it with a preeminent position in the state’s political echelon, highlighting the electorate’s being reposed in it. Constituted by the BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), and Ajit Pawar’s faction of the NCP, the coalition widely rejoiced at its sweeping success by celebrating across the state. The BJP, which accounted for the coalition’s victory with 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and Ajit Pawar’s faction with 41 seats, gave the MVA, comprising Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar’s NCP, and Congress, 16 seats in stark contrast to Mahayuti. The remaining seats were accounted for by independent candidates and smaller parties.

The Factors Behind Mahayuti’s Triumph

The victory of the Mahayuti coalition could be due to its stated united strategy and a concentrated campaign focusing on infrastructure development, economic stability, and social welfare programs. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde acknowledged the grand victory given by voters because they trusted Mahayuti owing to their united front. While the MVA grappled with some challenges in coalition formation and was unable to attract voters with its internal splits. Analysts suggest that Mahayuti’s ability to present a united front, coupled with effective grassroots outreach, played a pivotal role in tilting the scale.
