Food delivery giant Zomato has surprised the internet with a major rebranding decision. The company’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, announced on X that Zomato Ltd. will be renamed Eternal Ltd., sparking a wave of reactions online. However, the food delivery app will continue operating under the Zomato name.
In an official statement, Goyal explained, “After acquiring C, we have been using “Eternal” internally to better represent our brand. Now, with Blinkit taking a major role in our business plan, it makes sense to change the company name to Eternal Limited.” Shareholders will have a chance to approve this and once they do, the corporate website will change from ZOMATO to ETERNAL.
Netizens React to the Name Change
Social media users had mixed reactions to the rebranding. One user wrote, “Zomato was a great name, why change it?” while another joked, “Now there’s no debate on how to pronounce Zomato—because it’s Eternal!” Some compared it to Facebook’s rebranding as Meta and Google’s transformation into Alphabet.
Others were more critical, with one user commenting, “Perfect example of fixing something that isn’t broken.” Another user humorously speculated, “Swiggy might rename itself ‘Perpetual’ next!”
Financial Performance and Search Trends
Zomato reported a 57% drop in profit after tax (PAT) in Q3FY25, falling to Rs 59 crore from Rs 138 crore in the same period last year. However, revenue saw a 64% Y-o-Y increase to Rs 5,404 crore.
Following the announcement, Google searches for ‘Zomato Eternal’ surged, with related terms like ‘Eternal meaning’, ‘Zomato new name’, and ‘Zomato logo’ trending.
While the company believes the change reflects its evolving business, customers seem to have mixed feelings. Whether Eternal lives up to its ambitious name remains to be seen.
