Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, passed away on 26 December 2024 at the age of 92 years after battling with health complications that were caused by his old age. His demise has elicited an outpouring of grief and respect from political leaders and citizens across the nation.

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge paid their last respects to Singh at his residence in New Delhi on December 27, 2024.  Sonia Gandhi, who appointed Singh as Prime Minister in 2004, professed deep sorrow and praised Singh for his commitment to the upliftment of the country. Rahul Gandhi reflected on Singh’s legacy, saying that he played a significant role in steering India towards economic liberalization and growth. Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress, lauded Singh’s integrity and his contributions towards building a developed India.

Singh’s body was placed in a coffin draped in the Indian flag for dignitaries and the public to pay their last respects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Singh’s residence to offer condolences, acknowledging his significant role in India’s economic transformation.

The government has announced seven days of national mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast and official entertainment events will be suspended. Singh will be cremated on December 28, 2024, in New Delhi, attended by leaders across the political spectrum and citizens who will come to pay their last respects.

Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics, leaving behind an economic transformation and a commitment to public service that continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike.
