Munger, Bihar, 31 March:
A violent clash erupted in Soti Pul Padia village under the Bariyarpur police station area on Saturday night following the arrest of Devraj Kumar alias Debu, an accused in a robbery case. The situation worsened as family members and villagers blocked the road in protest, leading to a confrontation with the police.
As per reports, after Kumar’s arrest, his relatives and other villagers staged a roadblock, preventing traffic movement. When the police arrived to disperse the crowd and clear the blockade, the protesters turned violent, leading to stone-pelting. In the chaos, four police personnel, including two women officers, sustained injuries. The injured officers were identified as woman police officer Kanchan Kumari, female constable Keshari Kumar, constable Vinod Kumar, and constable Navod Kumar. They were rushed to a health center for medical treatment.
In response to the attack, police personnel conducted a lathi-charge to control the violent crowd. Subsequently, a case was registered at the Bariyarpur police station against 25 identified individuals and 40-50 unidentified persons involved in the violence. Ten people, including Sarika Kumari, Reena Devi, Julie Raj, Nilu Kumari, Nikita Kumari, Nikhil Kumar, Kumud Kumar, Pawan Kumar, Dhanraj Kumar, and Hrithik Raj, were arrested and later sent to jail.
SHO Veerbhadra Singh stated that Devraj Kumar, son of the late Dhananjay Yadav, was apprehended as part of an ongoing investigation into a robbery case. Following his arrest, his relatives and other villagers obstructed the road, protesting against the police action. Reports indicate that the protesters misbehaved with the police and escalated the situation by pelting stones at them.
On Sunday, Sadar SDPO Abhishek Anand confirmed that Bariyarpur police had raided Padia village at night and successfully detained Kumar. Upon receiving the information, a police team, led by the SHO, was dispatched to the scene. Efforts to calm the protesters failed as the crowd turned aggressive, resulting in injuries to the police officers.
This marks the third attack on a police team in the district within the past 16 days. In one of the previous incidents, an ASI lost his life, and eight police personnel were injured.
