Sanju Samson’s Vijay Hazare Absence Risks Champions Trophy Spot

As per reports, Sanju Samson, the Indian wicket-keeper, runs the risk of being overlooked for the national team selection for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy because he chose to sit out the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been firm about the participation of national-level players in domestic tournaments during off-India seasons, making Samson’s absence a point of contention.

The refusal of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) team selection committee to include Samson in their squad stems from the fact that Samson had declared he would not attend the preparatory camp. One of the BCCI sources explained, “The selectors and the board have reiterated the importance of participating in the domestic cricket same as all the others. Even Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer did not escape without consequences for skipping some domestic games without a valid reason. In the case of Samson, there was no such reason given for not being present. Under these circumstances, this selection is likely to be jeopardized.”

The KCA and Samson have had a strained relationship, but insiders insist such issues should not come at the cost of missed game time. “If there’s a misunderstanding with the state association, it needs resolution. Domestic cricket is crucial for staying match-ready and proving form,” the source added.

Reports indicate that Samson faces stiff competition for the Champions Trophy squad, with Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel leading the race for wicket-keeper spots. While Pant remains the selectors’ top choice, Jurel’s consistent domestic performances and Samson’s absence may give the young keeper an edge.

Samson’s decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some defending his personal choices and others questioning his dedication to the national cause. As the Champions Trophy looms, his omission from domestic cricket could leave him sidelined in favor of players actively proving their mettle in the domestic circuit.

For now, the ball is in Samson’s court to clarify his stance and work toward mending relations with both the selectors and KCA, ensuring he remains in contention for future opportunities.
