Directed by Reema Kagti, Superboys of Malegaon is a heartfelt ode to the dreams and struggles of small-town filmmakers. The film portrays how Nasir Shaikh and his passionate group of friends in Malegaon, Maharashtra, set out to create their version of Sholay, infused with the cultural ethos of their hometown. The trailer captures the essence of their filmmaking journey, filled with ambition, humor, and the sheer determination to overcome limited resources.

A Film Inspired by Real-Life Passion

Nasir Shaikh, the pioneer of Malegaon’s unique filmmaking industry, attended the event and shared his emotional journey. In a touching moment, he took Zoya Akhtar’s hand, placed it on his chest, and said,

“Dekho, meri heartbeat badh gayi hai! I am happy; too happy. I want to thank Reema ji and Zoya ji. They made a film on my life. I am so excited.”

His heartfelt words brought an emotional wave to the gathering, reinforcing the significance of the film.

Zoya Akhtar recalled her first meeting with Nasir at the Osian Film Festival in Delhi, where he humorously admitted,

“I know who you are. I have copied your father’s films!”

This humorous yet profound statement highlighted the impact of Bollywood on aspiring filmmakers in small towns. Screenwriter Varun Grover added a witty remark, saying, “One more level of Meta is that Nasir remade Sholay, and now Zoya is telling his story.”

A Celebration of Malegaon’s Cinematic Spirit

Superboys of Malegaon not only pays tribute to Nasir Shaikh’s filmmaking journey but also looks into the camaraderie and obstacles faced by small-town filmmakers. The trailer presents a film-within-a-film concept, showcasing the dynamics between directors, writers, and actors as they strive to bring their vision to life against all odds.

The film will make its international premiere by opening at The National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) on February 13, 2025, in Sydney. Following its festival circuit, it is set to release in cinemas on February 28, 2025.

Rising Concerns Over Theatrical Ticket Prices

During the event, producer Ritesh Sidhwani addressed a pressing issue in the film industry—the high cost of movie tickets. “The problem is the prices of tickets in cinemas. On Cinema Days, we see ticket prices go down, and it leads to a lot more footfall. If we can have a more affordable price point, you’d see a bigger turnout.” His statement resonated with many, reflecting ongoing discussions about making theatrical experiences more accessible to audiences.

As anticipation builds for the release of Superboys of Malegaon, the film stands as a testament to the undying passion of aspiring filmmakers who refuse to let constraints hinder their dreams. With its heartwarming narrative and an ensemble cast bringing the story to life, the film promises to inspire audiences across the globe.
