Heavy rain and snowfall continue to wreak havoc in the hilly states of India, with Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir facing severe disruptions. For the past three days, higher regions of Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing heavy snowfall, while lower areas have received continuous rainfall. Another round of rain and snowfall is expected on March 3, but weather conditions are predicted to clear up by March 5 and 6.
According to the Power and State Emergency Operations Center, the last few days have left over 2,300 power transformers damaged, 650 active and functional roads closed, and the region has experienced cloudbursts in Kullu and Kangra. The flood that ensued as a result has also destroyed over 12 vehicles and closed down the Badrinath National Highway.
The adverse weather has forced authorities to shut down schools and colleges in Chamba and Manali. However, CBSE board exams will continue as scheduled.
In Jammu & Kashmir, Gulmarg received the highest snowfall of 113 cm, while Sonamarg recorded 75 cm between February 25 and 28. Due to worsening weather, the government has extended the winter vacation in schools by six days. Moreover, the Class 10–12 board exams scheduled for March 1 and 3 have been postponed to March 24 and 25.
The heavy rainfall has reduced the winter rain deficit by 50%, raising river and reservoir levels by 3 to 4 feet. Batote in Ramban district recorded the highest rainfall of 163.7 mm, followed by Katra (118 mm) and Banihal (100 mm). Authorities remain on high alert as the situation unfolds.
