3 April, Jamnagar, Gujarat:
A two-seater Jaguar jet aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in an open field in Suvarda village, Jamnagar, during a night training mission on Wednesday. One of the pilots died due to his injuries while the other is being treated at a Jamnagar hospital, as per the IAF statement on Thursday.
The accident occurred around 10 PM, 18 km from Jamnagar city, near the Kalavad highway. The IAF released an official statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) detailing the circumstances of the crash. According to the statement, the jet suffered a technical issue mid-flight and the pilots attempted to eject from the aircraft. The action taken placed the jet in a position where it would not destroy the airfield or harm civilians in the vicinity.
An IAF statement noted, “IAF Jaguar two-seater aircraft airborne from Jamnagar Airfield crashed during a night mission. The pilots faced a technical malfunction and initiated ejection avoiding harm to an airfield and the local population. One pilot unfortunately incurred fatal injuries. The other is currently receiving treatment in a Jamangar hospital.”
The Air Force also expressed grief on the loss of life and family and has ensured a Court of Inquiry will look into the details surrounding the incident.
After the incident, a convoy of civic police, emergency services, and government officials reached the location. The Jamnagar Collector, KB Thakkar, mentioned that the accident site was in an open field, preventing civilian casualties.
This IAF Jaguar is known for its driving abilities at low altitudes, which require it to deeply penetrate enemy lines. It has been an important aspect of the IAF fleet for many years, used in numerous operations. However, there is a downside to this type of aircraft, as with all of this type, they require a lot of maintenance and watching to ensure that they are operably safe.
This incident raises concern about the reliability of the aging aircraft the IAF has in stock. The ISAF has gradually been transitioning towards its traditional aircraft for more advanced ones such as the Rafale and the domestic Tejas fighter jet.
