OYO has introduced a new check-in policy in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh which is effective immediately, to better align with “local social sensibility.” The policy will require couples to present valid proof of relationship for bookings. This move came after they received feedback from civil society groups and residents, particularly in Meerut. The feedback urged OYO to address concerns related to unmarried couples checking in. OYO emphasized its commitment to safe and responsible hospitality, balancing individual freedom with their responsibility o work alongside law enforcement and community groups.
Region Head for OYO North India said “We respect personal liberty but also recognize our duty to listen to the concerns of the local communities we operate in,” said Pawas Sharma, Region Head for OYO North India.
In 2016, OYO Rooms made headlines by declaring that it would welcome unmarried couples marking a significant shift in its hospitality approach. This shift was seen as progressive and aligned with the changing social norms of India where the younger generation was increasingly seeking more freedom and privacy. OYO aims to position itself as a modern and inclusive brand that values autonomy.
Their latest move cits the need to respect local social sensibilities and feedback from society. In some cities including Meerut, the company now requires valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in. The company aims to reshape its image as a safe and family-friendly brand, catering to families, students, business travelers, religious individuals, and solo travelers. This move is part of a broader effort to encourage longer stays and build customer loyalty.
Moreover, the company has launched nationwide initiatives, including seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices, and blacklisting hotels that promote immoral activities. They are taking action against unauthorized properties using the OYO brand. Keep Reading Questiqa India for more updates.
