March 3, New Delhi: On World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding India’s rich biodiversity. In a message shared on X, PM Modi emphasized the critical role of wildlife conservation in preserving the planet’s ecological balance.

Prime Minister Modi visited Sasan Gir in Gujarat, the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion. His visit aligns with this year’s theme, ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,’ which underscores the importance of sustainable funding and community involvement in conservation initiatives. During his visit, he inaugurated a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, aimed at enhancing healthcare facilities for the endangered Asiatic lion population.
Later, PM Modi chaired a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) at Singh Sadan, where key strategies for wildlife conservation were discussed. He also interacted with women forest staff, promoting inclusivity and encouraging greater female participation in conservation efforts.
Gujarat has emerged as a leader in wildlife conservation, particularly in protecting the Asiatic lion. The state has implemented robust measures to expand the lions’ habitat, which now spans nearly 30,000 square kilometers across nine districts. To further strengthen conservation efforts, the Gujarat government established a National Referral Centre for Wildlife in Junagadh and introduced advanced facilities, including a high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a modern veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir.
The state’s commitment extends beyond lions. The ‘Gir Samvad Setu’ initiative has successfully conducted over 300 community engagement programs to address local concerns and raise conservation awareness. Additionally, nine breeding centers have been set up to preserve herbivorous species, ensuring the ecological balance of the Gir forest.
In 2024, Gujarat bolstered its conservation framework by recruiting 237 beat guards, including 75 women, to enhance surveillance and protection within the Gir Protected Area. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi praised the coordinated efforts of the Gujarat Police and the Forest Department in safeguarding the state’s wildlife.
