Protestors vandalise Sheikh Mujibur’s house demanding ban on Awami league.

February 6, 2025, Bangladesh: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka was attacked and set ablaze by a mob in response to an online speech by former PM Sheikh Hasina. The protesters have demanded a ban on the Awami League.

An angry mob on Feb 5 evening vandalized and set fire to the Dhanmodi 32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, during a live online address by his daughter, Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina is the deposed Prime Minister.

The protestors stormed the premises around 8 pm- an earlier of their declared time of 9 pm. The protestors forcibly broke through the main gate and vandalised the premises. Many climbed the second floor, using hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks to destroy portraits of Shiekh Mujibur Rahman and other parts of the house.

The incident occurred in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and the structure was subsequently dismantled on Feb 6, 2025. The protesters were reportedly demanding a ban on Awmai League, the political party founded by Sheikh Majubur Rahman. This is not the first time the residence has been targeted by an angry mob. The residence was sent ablaze previously on August 5, 2024, when Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule came to an end.

A crane was brought to the site following social media announcements referring to the residence as a “pilgrimage site of fascism” However, as of 10:55 pm, the machine was outside the building, according to reports.

Hours after the mob vandalised the memorial and residence of Bangladesh founding father Sheikh Mujubur Rehman, machines were employed to dismantle the ruined and partly burnt structure on Thursday morning. The protestors chanted slogans such as “Fashi Fashi Fashi Chai, Sheikh Hasina Fashi Chai”(We demand Sheikh Hasina’s execution) and “Mujibader Astana, Ei Banglae hakbena” (The shelter of Mujibism will not remain in his Bangladesh).

In her address, Hasina asked Bangladeshis to resist the current regime. Despite the massive scale of the attack, at least a hundred law enforcers were seen standing at the entrance of Dhanmodi-32 road. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials claimed they were not aware of the planned demonstration.
