Just days after a devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake claimed over 120 lives in Tibet, a fresh tremor of magnitude 5.2 shook the region on Monday evening. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake struck at 6:27 PM IST, with its epicenter at a latitude of 28.39°N and a longitude of 87.39°E in Xizang. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The NCS shared the details in a post on X, stating, “EQ of M: 5.2, On: 13/01/2025, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xizang.” While there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
This latest earthquake comes as Tibet grapples with the aftermath of the January 7 disaster, which saw a 7.1-magnitude earthquake devastate Tingri County. The powerful tremor, followed by multiple aftershocks, resulted in the deaths of 126 people, injuries to over 300, and extensive damage to more than 1,000 homes. Over 30,000 residents were evacuated as emergency teams worked around the clock to provide relief and shelter.
The repeated seismic activity has left the region on edge, with rescue teams and disaster relief workers continuing their efforts amid challenging conditions. Experts warn of potential aftershocks, urging residents to remain vigilant.
As Tibet battles the twin challenges of recovery and resilience, the global community watches, offering condolences and support to those affected by this tragic series of events.
