Guwahati (Assam), January 17: The Assam government has made a ₹2,000 crore allocation for women-centric schemes as well as improving the welfare measures for state employees. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting yesterday, with the chief minister Bolsoma Biswa Sarma at the helm of affairs and this was finalized.
The proposed initiatives will reach out to 27 lakh women affiliated with the Self Help Group (SHG) community. With a maximum allocation of ₹50,000 targeted for the third phase, the three-phased assistance according to the proposed model has ₹10,000 set for the first and ₹25,000 for the second. “This scheme aims to bolster the economic independence of women in Assam,” said CM Sarma.
Infrastructure development also moved ahead with the opening up of a ₹70 crore road from Balimukh to Sildubi through Bhuragaon as well as a comprehensive drainage network for ₹55 crore in Sioux City in Morigaon district.
Insurance Benefits for 4 Lakh State Employees
In a separate milestone, the Assam government signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the State Bank of India (SBI) and Union Bank of India (UBI) to offer zero-premium insurance coverage to over four lakh state government employees. The move is part of an initiative by the State Finance Department to secure extensive financial protection for employees at no cost.
Under the scheme, employees will be eligible for:
- ₹10 lakh coverage for term life insurance (including natural and accidental deaths).
- ₹1 crore coverage for accidental death.
- Up to ₹1 crore for permanent total disability.
- Up to ₹80 lakh for permanent partial disability.
- ₹2 crore coverage for air accident fatalities.
Additionally, health insurance will be available at affordable rates for employees opting into the program. Applications can be submitted at branches of SBI, UBI, or other impaneled banks where salary accounts are maintained. Employees must ensure their accounts are categorized as salary accounts by updating their passbooks.
