On December 19, 2024, BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured during the fracas at the Makar Dwar gate of Parliament. The BJP claims that it was Rahul Gandhi’s actions that resulted in an injury. Both MPs were hospitalized, with Sarangi suffering a head injury and Rajput experiencing dizziness and elevated blood pressure.
In response, BJP MP Anurag Thakur filed a police complaint against Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of assault, incitement, and attempt to murder under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 109 (abetment), 115 (abetment of offense punishable with death or imprisonment for life), 117 (abetting commission of offense by the public), 125 (waging war against any Asiatic power in alliance with the Government of India), 131 (abetting mutiny), and 351 (assault).
The scuffle followed remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha, where he stated that invoking B.R. Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion,” a comment deemed insulting by the opposition. This led to protests from Congress and other opposition members, demanding Amit Shah’s resignation.
The Congress party has downplayed the accusations, with General Secretary KC Venugopal describing the case against Rahul Gandhi as a “badge of honor” for defending B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy. The incident has intensified tensions between the BJP and Congress, with both parties accusing each other of orchestrating the confrontation.
